ASEAN Jewelry Association Strengthens Regional Unity, Global Reach - jewelry industry
AGJA aims to unite and strengthen the jewelry industry in ASEAN and beyond, positioning the region as a global production and trade hub.

Suttipong Damrongsakul, President of the ASEAN Gems and Jewellery Trade Association (AGJA), has been a key figure in the gemstone and jewelry industry since 1995, serving as the Managing Director of Gemopolis. His extensive experience has supported strong relationships with stakeholders across the industry, leading to the establishment of AGJA in 2018.

AGJA aims to unite and strengthen the jewelry industry in ASEAN and beyond, positioning the region as a global production and trade hub. Damrongsakul’s vision for AGJA includes enhancing collaboration, trade, and investment among members, with a focus on China, Hong Kong, and Middle Eastern countries.

Strengthening Unity and Collaboration in the ASEAN Jewelry Sector

To achieve its goals, AGJA engages in various collaborative activities. These include participating in major fairs like CIIE and the Beijing Fair, organizing events for personnel development, and hosting seminars and summits. AGJA also works closely with organizations like DITP and GIT to attract international buyers and visitors to events such as Bangkok Gems.

One notable initiative is the proposed co-hosting of the ASEAN+ Jewellery and Gems Summit with Informa Market during JGAB. AGJA’s efforts extend to facilitating trade information exchange and international linkages through seminars, forums, and conferences in cities like Shanghai and Istanbul.

AGJA’s unique structure, with members from trade associations, production companies, and Thai-based businesses, sets it apart from other trade associations. Its Secretariat Office in Shanghai and Representative Office in Hong Kong further enhance its international reach.

Handling Challenges and Seizing Opportunities

The ASEAN gem and jewelry industry faces challenges such as global economic fluctuations, rising raw material prices, and geopolitical tensions. However, AGJA identifies opportunities in China, Middle Eastern countries, and intra-ASEAN trade.

To support its members, AGJA assists in organizing international conferences and exhibitions, conducts roadshows, and provides guidance on tax laws and regulatory issues. The association also plans to expand its influence by participating in exhibitions in new markets.

Damrongsakul emphasizes the importance of product design, branding, and online marketing for new entrepreneurs. He advises minimizing investment in manufacturing facilities and focusing on co-production systems and market understanding.

AGJA membership offers benefits such as expanded business networks, access to industry information, and connections with trade associations and raw material sources. The association’s online platforms facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among members.

The association also plans to include its members in the CIIE under the AGJA Pavilion and organize a conference/forum in Hong Kong in 2025.

Supporting Members and Driving Industry Growth

AGJA assists members in understanding and handling tax laws and regulatory issues by collecting information on legal tax regulations and guidelines from member countries.

AGJA’s efforts are focused on supporting the long-term viability of the gem and jewelry industry.

AGJA’s Vision for ASEAN’s Gem and Jewelry Industry

AGJA envisions ASEAN becoming a major global market for gemstones and jewelry, leveraging its strong manufacturing base, raw material sources, and experienced entrepreneurs. The shift from OEM to ODM models allows ASEAN businesses to create their own brands, enhancing competitiveness in international markets.
