George Brown Polytechnic Halts New Enrollment in Jewellery Programs for 2027-28

Effective immediately, George Brown Polytechnic will no longer accept new applicants for its jewellery-related programs beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. The institution attributes this move to evolving federal immigration policies targeting international students, financial viability concerns, and shifting trends within Ontario’s college system.

This choice stems from a full evaluation launched in 2025, which revealed that maintaining the current program structure poses long-term challenges. According to the Polytechnic, ongoing financial pressures and operational constraints, combined with an unstable education system, have made continued operation unsustainable.

Recent adjustments to federal regulations have further complicated enrollment projections. Key changes include stricter limits on study permits, revised requirements for Provincial Attestation Letters, and modified eligibility for Post-Graduation Work Permits. The institution states these updates have disrupted admission numbers, class sizes, seating arrangements, and overall capacity planning across Ontario’s postsecondary colleges.

As a result, no incoming students will be admitted to the Jewellery Essentials, Jewellery Methods, Jewellery Arts, or Gemmology programs for the upcoming cycle.

Enrolled students, however, will proceed under a structured completion plan. Those in good standing may finish their programs as scheduled, the Polytechnic confirmed.
